Real Estate Agents vs. Realtors: What’s the difference?

It’s a little known fact that there is a difference between Real Estate Agents and Realtors. Unless you work in the industry, it’s common to think of them as one and the same. However, there are some important differences that make Realtors the best choice for home buyers. While there are overlaps in their responsibilities, there are important distinctions when it comes to qualifications.

    Realtors

Realtors are licensed real estate professionals who are also members of the National Association of Realtors (NAR). To become a member, realtors must agree to uphold the association’s standards and code of ethics as well as pass a course on the NAR code of ethics every four years.

Realtors are also open to a variety of professions within real estate. These include:

    • Appraisers
    • Residential and commercial real estate brokers
    • Salespeople
    • Property Managers

Besides upholding a higher standard, Realtors also go through code of ethics training, have access to more extensive market research and technology reports, and have access to historical data requests. No matter what role a Realtor takes, they must be an expert in their field.

All Real Estate Agents on The Fields Team are Realtors and are members of the boards locally. They are on the Salt Lake Board of Realtors, Utah County Board of Realtors, Northern Wasatch Association of Realtors, and anywhere else they may be working.

    Real Estate Agents

A Real Estate Agent is a licensed professional that helps people buy, sell, or rent a variety of housing and real estate. They are required to go through pre-licensing training which includes many hours of coursework. The amount of hours depends on where you live. Aspiring agents must take and pass a written exam and must know and understand the federal real estate laws and local state-specific laws.

Many professionals starting out in real estate begin by becoming an agent. Agents can represent both buyers and sellers. Many of the responsibilities you may think of when it comes to buying and selling your home can be carried out by an agent, including assisting in the negotiation process.
