Provo's Google Fiber: A Different Kind of Internet
Google Fiber: A Different Kind of Internet
In early April, the rumor mills were a buzz in Provo that something major was going to happen in Provo to the city, especially when Mayor Curtis released a time for a major announcement. Guesses for the epic announcement ranged from a City Creek–like mall, Disneyland, Provo/Orem Merger, to a wall, bubble or fence being built around the City (in addition to the bubble already around Happy Valley as a whole).
Provo City made the epic announcement Wednesday April 17, 2013 that Google had chosen Provo, Utah to be the third city to receive Google Fiber. Google Fiber would be installed at no additional cost to taxpayers, would be available to residents at a fraction of the cost of currently available internet (see below for more details), and will become available quickly, likely by the end of 2013.
This announcement is putting Provo on the National Map as it is only the 3rd city so far to get Google Fiber (Kansas City, Mo. and Austin, TX being the other two). Not only will this be a great blessing and cost savers for current residents, but the technology and speed of Google Fiber is expected to turn Provo into a hot spot for tech companies, both start-ups and established companies looking to relocate. With the savings and expected new jobs, it is expected to create a huge boost to local real estate values, especially in Provo but also in the surounding areas.
Provo Mayor John Curtis wrote: 'I'm not sure it will be viewed by everyone as epic but for me it will be the single largest accomplishment of my professional career. It should be of no surprise that something of this nature has also come with a large amount of stress. I wake each night several times worried about how it will be received by residents.'
'If giving free Internet to every home in Provo isn't epic, I don't know what's epic,' Curtis said.
How did Provo City pull it off?
Google bought Provo Fiber Service for $1. The city will still have to front $1.7 million in equipment, civil engineering and insurance costs according to the Salt Lake City Tribune. In addition, taxpayers must pay off that $39 million bond. With interest, this comes out to $3.3 million in yearly bond payments over the next 12 years, the paper said.
Kansas City has already seen an uptick in startup activity since the launch of the network there, and Austin said it expects the same type of entrepreneurship when Google Fiber arrives in 2014.
So everyone is excited about Google Fiber Provo; but now what?
Google Fiber will be purchasing iProvo, which is an existing fiber-optic network owned by the city of Provo. As a part of the acquisition, Google will commit to upgrading the network to gigabit technology and finish network construction so that every home along the existing iProvo network will have the opportunity to connect to Google Fiber.
Which areas of Provo will get service?
The original network was built 10+ years ago and a lot has evolved since. Google wants to upgrade it to todays latest technologies and hopes to fulfill the city’s original vision – widespread, high speed connectivity throughout the community by offering Free Service to every home along the existing iProvo network

Then, they will look at those communities and determined very clear boundaries at their edge like streets and parks.
